Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision

Overview

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for Construction Supervisors, Gangers, and Work Leads who play an active role in supervising construction site activities.

Unlike a classroom course, this is a competency-based assessment—you’ll demonstrate your organisational, technical, and supervisory abilities in a live working environment.

To succeed, you must already be supervising teams and able to show evidence of building strong, productive working relationships with others on-site.

This qualification is ideal for:

  • Site Supervisors and Gangers
  • Experienced operatives looking to move into supervision
  • Those already responsible for planning, organising, and monitoring teams
  • Individuals aiming to gain a CSCS Gold Card

Entry Requirements

To register for this qualification, you must meet three key criteria:

1. Industry Experience:

  • You must have hands-on experience in your trade or occupational area.

2. Supervisory Responsibility:

  • You must currently be supervising a team, with proven experience in overseeing construction work.

3. Occupational Competence:

  • You must hold at least a Level 2 NVQ or equivalent in your trade (or SCQF Level 5 in Scotland).

Qualification Structure

To complete the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision, you must complete:


All 6 Mandatory Units:

  1. Confirming work activities and resources
  2. Developing and maintaining working relationships
  3. Confirming work methods
  4. Implementing health, safety, and welfare practices
  5. Coordinating and organising work operations
  6. Monitoring progress against schedules


Minimum of 2 Optional Units

  • Allocating and monitoring plant and equipment
  • Confirming work meets contractual standards
  • Supporting team performance
  • Confirming dimensional control requirements

Prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and GRE with our comprehensive test prep courses. Our experienced instructors will provide you with the tools and strategies you need to excel on test day.

Yes. This qualification is fully accredited by either SQA or ProQual and is recognised by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).

It meets the required standards for applying for the CSCS Gold Supervisory Card, validating your:

  • ✅ Relevant qualifications

Achieving this qualification will demonstrate your ability to lead safely, effectively, and professionally—making you a valuable asset on any construction project.


You’ll need to provide proof of your competency and experience through one of the following:

  • ✅ Qualification Evidence:
    • N/SVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in your trade area
  • ✅ Employer Endorsement:
    • A signed letter from your employer confirming your current supervisory role
  • ✅ Portfolio or Professional Discussion:
    • Collected evidence and verbal review of past experience

Once enrolled, Skillrise will assign you a dedicated assessor to guide you through your qualification journey.

Your Path to Completion:

1. Induction Visit

  • Your assessor explains the full process, evidence requirements, and timelines.

2. On-Site Observation

  • A visit is arranged to observe you supervising real construction activities.

3. Assessment Methods May Include:

  • Professional discussions
  • Knowledge-based questions
  • Witness testimonials
  • Work-based portfolio evidence

This flexible, workplace-based approach ensures minimal disruption to your working schedule.


Upon completion of your Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision, you’ll be eligible to:

  • Apply for a CSCS Gold Supervisory Card
  • Progress to the NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision
  • Move into more senior roles such as Site Manager or Construction Supervisor
  • Enrol in SMSTS or other advanced training pathways
